Theme and aims of the Activity
This meeting brought together 50 youth experts, african youth workers, social workers from african diaspora organizations, african professionals and trainers, community facilitators and young people with african background from disadvantage neighborhoods from south side region of Lisbon - Setubal district as way to discuss about the best way of integration of young descendants of african people living in problematic neighborhoods. This meeting was fundamental to understand the societal concerns and problems and the reason why african young people suffer police brutality in their neighborhoods and what can be the best approach for community facilitators and residents young people with african background can do to reduce the risk of social and economical inclusion and what kind of knowledge can be learnt to eradicate the racism and discrimination from people, institutions and authorities used in disadvantage neighborhoods with significant number of people with african background. The themes of this meeting were, combat all forms of racism, reduce the stigmatization of local authorities related with african black people living in problematic neighborhoods, migrants, social and economical inclusion, youth participation, dialogue between young people and decision makers and democratic citizenship. The meeting will be based on a whole series of participatory methodologies, based on Non-Formal education, which aim to give the participant a stimulating environment for learning, sharing and knowledge-based growth. The diversity of methods done in the meeting took into account the variety of participants' profiles in order to find inclusive mechanisms for participation of all participants. It allowed the development of a key proposals and recommendations that can contribute to the development of public policies in the area of youth participation, employment and education, with special focus on school leavers. The involvement of the key actors increase the interested of different organizations and local authorities to work together on behalf of youth in the region. This meeting was also good opportunity to present European youth opportunities and programmes and allowed young people to get more interest to participate and involve in the European youth programme and contributing to the development of a more inclusive and participatory society. The main objectives of this meeting were to provide police recommendations of young people from disadvantage neighborhoods to the local governments; to create better social projects that involve african youth diaspora living in problematic neighborhoods; to give opportunity for young people with few opportunities to learn more about other locals habits and customs; to reduce urban conflict and capacity youth mediators from local neighborhoods; to reduce the negative impact of racism, discrimination, xenophobia, prejudice and intolerance on african black people in portuguese society; to increase the number of local youth mediators and give them more capacity; to increase the availability among young people to work in the social inclusion, within local communities and to increase the participant's motivation to introduce into intercultural learning, structure dialogue and the engagement of youth people in participation in decision making structures.
